Cell locking allows you to lock individual cells in a Grid to prevent modifications. This feature gives you precise control over which content can be edited. For example, you can lock completed strings that are ready for release to prevent accidental edits before launch.
You can lock almost any cell type, including:
- Source language cells
- Target language cells
- Custom column cells
Cells in reference columns, formula columns, and some system columns cannot be locked.
Lock and unlock cells
To lock a cell:
- In a Grid, select the cell you wish to lock.
- Right-click and select Lock cell in the dropdown menu.
When a cell is locked, it displays a diagonal hatch pattern with a lock icon in the bottom-right corner of the cell. These visual indicators help you quickly identify which cells are protected from modifications.

To unlock a cell:
- In a Grid, select the cell you wish to unlock.
- Right-click and select Unlock cell in the dropdown menu.
This will make the cell become editable again.

You can lock or unlock multiple cells at the same time.

Locked cell behavior
Locking a source language cell doesn't affect its Source status.
When a cell is locked, its value cannot be updated through:
- The Gridly interface
- Automation
- Localization import
- Data import
- Public API
Cell metadata remains editable through the Gridly interface, including:
- Dependency status
- Background color
- Maximum length settings
- Other metadata properties
